InSuggest was very interesting. A mashup of posted images using Flickr, Photos, Ajax or Motd as the viewer options for the images. Loved the easy ability to link this to my deli.icio.us account using the share feature. 15 different ways I could have chosen to "share" this find. Great way to link archival pictures to other web tools.
Looking at posts in Searchroll of Rollyo on librarianblogs on the topic of privacy i found a few pointers. Consider using a pseudonym instead of your real name if you want to be anonymous. Unless you restrict acess to your blog anyone can view it. You may want to have different blogs for different audiences. Sharing technologies in this social networking format increase the audience for your blog. The privacy that one would expect as a library user in the pre-web 2.0 era is not what exists in this arena.

Week 7 Podcasting and Online Hosted Video
My YouTube experience was both exciting and a bit difficult. Can see the possibilties of using it to teach some of the library skills we provide to new staff and for orientating users to new/updated search interfaces.
When trying to post to my blog from YouTube I kept getting a message saying that I had no blogger account. I think the problem was that the YouTube account email address was not my google email address. I did create a link to my blog of 2 YouTube library videos but there may have been an easier way.
Podcasting was a little better and I want to try it for a trial term here for introducing our library services and resources to the new medical students who may like doing this on their schedule.
Stay tuned for our first attempt at creating a podcast for our library users.

Week 6 Online Photo Sharing and Uploading
Thanks for a fun week of learning how to share photos and load them up to our blog. Library applications that would work for us include digitizing some of the archival photos and providing them through our blog and flickr to the general public and those interested in the hospital history. Hotel Dieu of St. Joseph merged with Salvation Army Grace Hospital almost 10 years ago now and we are frequently asked by history students and others for pictures of the past of both organizations.
Applying multiple tags for the photos and allowing others to add tags and comments will make them even more useful over time.

Week 5 Web Office Tools
Definitely can see the usefulness of Google Docs in collaboration work for students and individuals who need to work on group assignments and having all the editing done on a single copy of a document. Gets rid of multiple editions of the same paper, not knowing which edition is the latest, etc.
Not sure if companies will buy into using something free as security of information could be an issue. Harder to ensure that a document doesn't pass to someone other than an employee. Something which could happen if an email address is typed in incorrectly. One question I'd like more information on is just how secure are documents on this system.
Was it easy? Yes - great for putting information together for a classroom, writing a journal article with multiple authors, collaborating on a project.
Is this the future of all Software products? The collaboration mechanisms need to be present in all future software and the ability for people to meet over the web and view/share documents. How to secure those items requiring that they do not become accessible in the public domain will be critical. Without security being addressed many institutions will not allow such use. Particularly sensitive libraries will be those in hospitals, long term care facilities, government agencies and law firms.

MLA CE Week 4
Delicious - its exactly that. Great way to both easily bookmark sites, categorize them, share them with others. Will be a good tool for our library staff - instead of everyone having to find them on their own, sharing the best sites will save us time. End users can be assisted through a collection of bookmarks within Delicious - each organized by the tags or subheadings that our staff assigns.
Library staff won't have to be tied to their own computers but rather can access their favourite site's bookmarks on any of our library's computers or any computer at all - home, work, or while working off-site.
Will definitely put this tool to work with our department to see if the team finds it as useful as I do.

Week 3 Social Networking Tools
Social networking tools could be used by MLA to connect members for group events at annual conferences, job postings, and continuing education events. However I would like to see that this information continues to be posted through other communication tools.
Our library would benefit from a Facebook or MySpace page as a forum for announcing end user training classes, new collections and titles in the library and a welcome announcement for new staff and services.
Privacy concerns are real for individuals using social network sites. One has to ensure that what you include in your profile is really what you want anyone in the world to know. Keep is simple, not inclusive of all your personal data. My experience with the tools this week has helped to be more knowledgeable about the tools that our user population is using and familiar with. I'll be further exploring whether these tools can benefit our library.

Week 2 Wikis and Blogs
Wiki's are more suited to collaboration and blogs are working well for us as a communication tool for group members.
I created a wiki for my library team at HDGH library. The link is: http://hdghlibrary.wetpaint.com/. The only downside I see now is that I'm having difficulty loading large files to the wiki.
The blog I created was for our hospital employees who are participating in Weight Watchers at Work. Looking for an easy and fun way to communicate meeting room changes, registration information and best of all great new recipes to try. The link to my blog is: http://wwhdgh.blogspot.com/.
Definitely need more practice with both of these web tools.
